Carbonates contain the carbonate ion CO32-. Acids release hydrogen ions, H+. In the presence of an an acid, the carbonate ion will form carbonic acid, H2CO3, an unstable molecule that readily breaks down into water and carbon dioxide.

When an acid reacts with a carbonate a substaitution reaction occurs, producing carbonic acid and a corresponding salt. For example, if hydrochloric acid reacts with calcium carbonate the reaction procedes like this:

2HCl + CaCO3 --> CaCl2 + H2CO3 . resulting in the formation of carbonic acid and calcium chloride.

Carbonic acid is unstable and will spontaneously decompose into water and carbon dioxide.
