If I am understanding you correctly, the cat is using its claws to attempt to push some unseen object away from its mouth.

If this is correct, The cat might have gotten into something it should not have that has an unpleasant taste to it. You should get the cat checked by a vet just to make sure it is not a poison of some sort. That seems to be the most common reason for this behavior
