Actually - it doesn't ! Peripheral devices are not for the computer's benefit - they're to aid the user. A computer will function perfectly well without a monitor, keyboard, rinter, or even a modem. The monitor lets the user see what the computer is doing, the keyboard lets the user interact with the information on the screen. The printer serves only to produce 'hard copy' so the user can take it away from the computer. The Modem is only needed if the user wishes to connect to another computer or the internet !

It can do any number of things, depending on what it is designed for. A peripheral is an "optional" attachable device, like a keyboard, mouse, monitor, joystick, or fingerprint scanner, which expands its capability beyond that of it's internal hardware. They generally "interface with a human" to recieve information or cammands. The monitor, of course does not recieve data, but rather "interface with a human" to output information in a form we can understand.
