It needs something to store electrical energy.
Some of the things needing that stored energy in order to operate when the engine is not running include:
- Starter to crank and start the engine.
- Lights [hazard flasher lights, headlights, parking lights, brake lights, interior lights, engine compartment and trunk interior work lights] when the engine is not operating.
- Radio and other sound/entertainment systems.
- Other devices like power mirrors, seats, windows, and trunk and fuel filler covers, etc.].
- The HVAC [heating, ventilating and air conditioning] blower.
- Other devices that I can't think of right now.
Also, even when the engine IS running, the battery acts as a "buffer" to dampen pulsations [voltage, noise, etc.] in the alternator output circuit.
