The heat from the buns will cause water vapour to condense at the inner (top) surface of the Styrofoam box, and the water vapour will make the buns wet. When you poke holes on the lid of the Styrofoam box, you're allowing the water vapour to escape through them.

the buns are hot and will produce steam so there will be water on the lid of the cap. to prevent this, hawkers pokes holes in the lid for the steam to escape.

As hot air rises into the air faster , the holes of the box allow the hot air to escape faster , therefore causing the buns to cool down faster .
