Hamsters hiss or make a high pitched screaming noise when they are scared or highly distressed. Say for instance if you are squeezing it too tightly or are handling it too much. If this is the case then it is best to leave the hamster for a couple of days in a quiet room to settle and get used to the smells and sounds of the home.
It is not advisable under any circumstance to handle a hamster until it is used to your voice and your smell.
