So it requires either gradual weaning of the substance of choice to give the body the chance to get used to less and less, or it requires treatment with medications such as antidepressants or antipsychotics. If the problem is really bad, the detox has to be done in a hospital setting, since vital signs and everything would need to be monitored, and any diseases caused by the addiction (such as liver damage) treated.
