Why does an ice cream melt while a cup of hot milk cools down when they are place in the same sorroundings?

All systems (in this case the ice cream and its surroundings) try to reach equilibrium. In this case equilibrium means all temperatures are the same. So the surrounding, where are assumed to be much bigger will influence the other items. The surroundings will actually get cooler from the ice cream but there is so much surroundings that the difference is too small to notice.
Its the same with the hot milk. Its trades its energy with the surroundings and they both equalize.
