not much different from a person haveing a hunger for core-dirt. its a meneral respondance that makes the craving take place. the result of the digesting soot for cats is similar to people eating core-dirt or match heads (it repulses insects sences and Spiders when bitten).

They might be eating It to get the nutrients that meet doesn't have. Ash is burned wood so there should be some nutrients in there. For example, have you ever seen a dog eat grass? It does that to get nutrients. I have also seen a dog eat horse dung, that is even better! It is all just digested grass (nutrients) that they don't have to chew. I no it all sounds utterly repulsive, but that is how carnivores eat there (veggies)!

Cats will try just about anything. Charcoal is an odd thing for them to eat, but animals tend to eat odd things at times.
