Exercise reduces stress. Many years of research clearly shows us that exercise is a proven stress reducer. Any physical activity boosts your endorphins. Endorphins give you an energy boost and make you feel happy. Endorphins are the neurotransmitters your brain produces when you exercise. Also when you are exercising you are burning the large amount of energy you have when you are stressed.

Exercise elevates your mood. Research shows that in some people regular exercise has as much of an effect on depression as antidepressants. Exercise creates more resilience to stress. The more endorphins you produce and the stronger your mind and body become you become more resilient to stress.

Exercise tips to reduce your stress:

  1. Walk.
  2. Yoga in your chair. Rent or buy a chair yoga tape and learn some yoga you can do at work in your chair. Yoga reduces stress, relaxes and strengthens you. (New study, MD Anderson, women with Breast cancer undergoing radiation, did yoga and reported feeling stronger and less tired than the non-yoga group).
  3. Hand weight. Keep a hand weight in your bottom drawer at work or under your desk. Sometime during the day lift your weight. You increase your bone density while you reduce your stress.
  4. Oxygen exercise. Take two minutes and do deep breathes it refreshes and clears the mind. (1-2-3-4 INHALE THROUGH YOUR NOSE, 1-2-3-4, EXHALE THROUGH YOUR MOUTH.) Imagine your lungs are balloons and your inflating and deflating them.
  5. New piece of furniture in the television room. Burn 200-300 calories and reduce your stress by getting on that treadmill or tread climber in the corner of your TV room. Watch the news, your favorite show or DVR the Big Bang Theory. Your children mirror your behavior. You are saving their lives by mentoring them.
  6. 10 minute bursts. Walk up and down the halls of your office, go up and down your work stairs, or walk around your building for 10 minutes and get an immune boost, produce serotonin, boost of endorphins and reduce your stress.
  7. New Choices. Tai Chi and Chi Gong. Go online and watch a video or get a teacher for tai chi or chi gong. Memorize 5-10 positions and you can use them anytime-anywhere. We have new research on these Eastern practices and their relaxation benefits.
  8. Family Exercise. After dinner take a family walk, put up Badminton net, or a Basketball hoop. Get your family moving.

Yes. Research has found that there are mental health benefits from exercise, including reduced stress and increased confidence for those who exercise regularly -- even 20 minutes a day.
