Painful urination (which doctors call dysuria) following ejaculation is a relatively common complaint among normal, healthy, and otherwise disease-free males in my experience. This kind of dysuria is typically benign; ie, it doesn't usually carry any long-term consequences. As far as I know, the exact mechanisms of dysuria following ejaculation are not known. Some have speculated that it involves a reflex mechanism that inhibits urination during sexual arousal; consequently, to urinate after sex requires pressures greater than normal, which may elicit pain. Another hypothesis is that prostate stimulation during sexual activity causes prostate swelling, which obstructs the prostatic urethra, the outlet of the bladder in males. As described above, this may increase the pressure required to urinate, causing pain with urination.

Whether you are experiencing benign dysuria cannot be determined over the internet. You should see a physician who can tell you with certainty whether the pain you are experiencing is harmless, or whether there could be an underlying disease process that needs investigating. In addition, you should ask your physician any questions you have about frequency of sexual activity, etc. Only she will be able to give you the proper guidance.

Lets start with common and not too serious and work toward the more serious.

  • Probably need to see your General Practitioner, Gynecologist or a Good Urologist.
  • Pain is usually defined as "Burning" or Other kind of pain
  • Burning is most commonly just a sign of something like a urinary tract infection (UTI), very common & very treatable. There is an over the counter product called Uristat that is pretty effective.
  • A simple antibiotic can be prescribed by your Dr, if the problem persists and relief will be 2-5 days in most cases.
  • Cranberry juice is the "gold standard" in home remedies and most women keep it on hand and start drinking it at the first sign of a UTI onset.
  • UTI, can always be a symptom of something more serious and if left untreated can cause serious infections further up the Urinary tract, bloodstream & Kidneys. A UTI can go from inconvenient to dangerous in a hurry so do not let them go untreated.
  • Almost all women will have UTI's in their lifetime, the female Urinary tract is prone to infection.
  • Men can also suffer from them.
  • Sexual contact, holding back urine, excessive masturbation and bad hygein are all common causes.
  • Increasing water and Cranberry juice intake, lessening the soft drinks, tea and coffee intake and freely and frequently voiding the bladder are all good habits for reducing.
