This is a ridiculous question. Germany and Austria-Hungary, the Central Powers were the "allies" in a technical sense, in that they belonged to the Dual Alliance. The Entente Powers were Britain, France and Russia-- which the writer of this question assumes were the "allies" or "good guys" utterly confusing the issue with the "allies"-- the correct term for the anti-Axis side in a different war (WWII). So, call the victor powers in WWI the Entente-- and Italy joined them in 1915 to round out the Entente. Also the grammar is flawed in the original question-- "what WERE their main roles?" it should read.
