Its not the torque converter. It's the electric air pump found on the inside frame rail on the driver's side roughly below the driver's seat. This air pump is the EGR system for these vehicles. What you are hearing is normal.
1.) Get the Torque converter checked.
2.) Possibly a problem with the fan clutch. Trailblazers have had a long history of the fan clutch failing on when heating up, and causes the fan to always stay on. Eventually, you may get a check engine light with the code referring to a fan clutch over speed.
It can be replaced by the DIYer, but requires some specialized tools to remove it.

Allow the engine to idle for one minute, and press the brakes. Keep the engine running and absorb the temperature of the fluid.
This is an engine swap and will require engineering mounts, drive shafts, computers and wiring.
If it is an automatic, the fluid should be at operating temperature. The transmission in park and the engine at idle. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry and check the level. Do not overfill.

It is a dipstick with a yellow end directly behind the oil dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it off stick it back in and check the level, be sure the engine/transmission is warm. The engine should be running to check the fluid level.
