Most likely cause is a failed sending unit in the tank.

Usually the gauge in on the dashboard with all the other gauges. That way you can read it while driving.
Sounds like the problem is going to be in your crossover. If you have an older tractor, which doesn't have a crossover, you might have a lever to manually select which tank the vehicle takes fuel from.

Yes Gas does not burn completely in the diesel motor. The unburned gas can then backfire suddenly through your exhaust while driving. I know.
