Algae is full of vitamins. So it is instinctual to the dog to lick the algae to try and get some of the vitamins.

This is usually a sign that your dog has a poor vitamin diet. Look into getting more vitamin in your dogs diet or ask a vet for a diet recommendation.

You should also not let your dog lick algae. In modern times algae is usually contaminated with chemicals from the air and water and can cause fatal toxic infections in dogs. See the related link below.
