Why does my dog scratch her back?

She could just have an itchy back like humans can get. The best thing to do is take a look. Take a brush or comb and brush hair in the opposite direction. If you see dandruff then your dogs skin is very dry and the best thing you can do is bath your dog with an oatmeal based dog shampoo (use it on my own dogs.) It could also be flea season in your area and I was quite surprised when my vet told me (I live in British Columbia, Canada) that fleas have a high resistance now and can strike pets at any time of the year ... even in the cold months of the year. If your dog is still scratching (they should be brushed every day) then take her to the vets as she may have a form of dermatitis. I have a Bishon Frise' that can have ear problems (inflamed) and I smell them every day to be sure there is no odor. I clean her ears with a herbal liquid solution every week and I also check all my pets (on all parts of the body) for lumps or bumps once a week.
