More than likely you have a bad seat safety switch. You must be sitting on the seat the engage the blades. If the safety thinks there's no one on the mower it will shut it down. You can try to use a jumper wire in the plug to see if that takes care of the problem. If it does then you nees to replace the switch or see why it's not making contact. It could also be that the fuel mixture is too lean and the engine stalls. Try opening the main carbruetor needle valve about 1/8 turn for a slightly richer mixture.
If your mower is from Sears, for example, the parts dept. sells manuals. You can "Goggle" for some manuals online, some of which can be downloaded for free. Good luck! I, too, am attempting to get a manual for an older riding mower.
There is usually a deck belt and a drive belt.
Most riding mowers have three or four safety switches. One for the seat, one for the clutch/brake pedal and one for the deck height lever. If the mower has a deck engaging lever there is one for that too.
maybe your deck is too low

The Husqvarna 24 hp 48 in. Deck Zero Turn Riding Mower is ideal for large yards but will cost you a bit more then it's competitors. It starts at around $2500.
It depends on the mower. Some you will need to remove the deck. Some you will have to remove the deck mounting brackets. Others will change without removing anything. For detailed info please ask again with the make and model of the mower.
