There are about four or five things that can cause this problem, I will start with the simplest first, FIRST, Check to see that the radiator is filled with plenty of water. SECOND, Are all the other guages working? if not it is likely an electrical or grounding problem (this is not A simple fix, just A simple diagnosis) . THIRD, The sending unit on the engine could be bad. FOURTH, the guage in the dash could be bad. There are A couple of other things that could cause the guage to quit, Bad repairs, Rats, Mice, other rodents, Good luck. **I have a 2001 Monte Carlo and I just went through the same thing! If your fans are running constantly also and even if they aren't....I would definitely look at the cooling system in relation to the thermostat and the coolant temp sensor. I had just flushed my cooling system but never changed anything but the coolant and the hoses and shortly after, the car started not showing any temperature on the gauge and my check engine came on and the fans constantly were running. After I replaced the thermostat and temp sensor, everything is back to normal!! Not sure which one of the two was the actual problem but since they were so close to each other... just didn't make sense in just doing one of them!! Learned my lesson on that years ago!!
