1. Oil generally leaks because of mechanical failures.

To contain oils there needs to be a mechanical seal of some sort.

This may be for the sake of argument a rubber ring or a flat strip or gasket seal of an appropriate material or even a propriety sealing agent which can be squeezed from a tube.

Simplistically a jar can be filled with oil and the lid which has a seal in it is placed on top secure enough to stop the contents leaking.

If that jar is connected to other jars by pipes to form a system they too need to have seals inserted where they join the jars so that there there are no leaks.

2. Seal failures can be caused by heat, chemical corrosion and or erosion , mechanical stress such as vibrations or bending or longevity of material properties such as the elasticity depreciating. Finally other causes can be attributed to wrongly fitted or inappropriate types of seals being fitted.
