There are many different types of paint. Also, metal is a non-porous surface, mostly - you can increase its porosity (or absorption, ability to hold paint) by sanding or otherwise roughing up the surface so the paint "grabs" better and has less probability of cracking. Temperature and other outside variables can also cause your paint to crack, depending on the type of paint, how it was applied, etcetera. Go get some paint that is specifically designed for metal, rough the surface up with some sandpaper or steel wool (rough stuff, not fine, you won't get anywhere with fine grit/wool) - make sure the surface is clean, paint it with some proper primer (or at least wipe it down with some alcohol) and then paint it - you should see nice results, given the metal in question isn't going to be flexing, bending, or taking excessive pressure - in that case, then really, there's nothing you can do - just sand it down and keep it bare metal.

Can you spray paint a flute?

If its metal then it'll crack easily. The best thing to do is to get sandpaper and rough up the exterior of the flute to help the paint stick. Also, use a sealer or gloss afterwards.

What type metal genre wear face paint?

Black metal bands usually do such as Dark Throne, Mayhem and Gorgoroth and Black/Death metal band Behemoth wear face paint as well even after their genre change to death metal. Some folk metal bands wear face paint (or war paint) as well in the case of Turisas. Cyber metal band The Kovenant also wear face paint. It all really depends on what sort of look or ideality the band is going for.

How does paint protect metal and what happens to the paint cracks?

The paint forms a seal and prevents water and air from reaching the metal surface and prevents corrosion or rust from forming. A crack in the paint would allow water to reach the metal and cause corrosion or rusting beneath the paint surface, out of sight until the rust becomes visible. A road chip thrown against a car's paintwork is a likely cause of pitting on a car - which spreads and causes rust holes in the car's bodywork unless treated as soon as possible.

Does spray paint adhere to electric tape?

Yes and no. Depends on the brand. I have used electrical tape as a paint mask on several metal projects. Hard acrylic paints usually crack and peal when I take it off. More flexable paints designed to paint plastics usually crack but still hold onto the tape. (If you are looking to use painted tape to add various colors to something you would do better to buy the tape in your desired color. It does come in more colors than just black.) If the tape isn't going to be moved after painting any paint that sayes it will work on plastic should be fine.
