Cars are distinctly louder upon cold start-up. Tolerances are tighter because things are colder, therefore everything's a bit louder. This happens to pretty much every car ever. If it's been colder overnight there than it has been in the last week or so (I know temperatures here have been all over the place for a month), you may just be noticing it now - because it would have normal over the winter.
Install a custom exhaust system.

if the engine is knocking really loud you probably need to overhaul the entire engine or get a new or used engine because loud knocking is not good
It is probably worn out and about to seize. Replace it before that happens so the system doesn't fill with debris from the pump.
EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) look for it to be attached to the exhaust manifold or a pipe from the exhaust manifold

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve on a 1989 S10 is located in the valve cover. It is toward the front of the motor.
