Sounds like top of filter is broken. There is a spider gasket inside there to separate all the different chambers. Is it backwashing at full force or just a little?
No, backwashing is used during the cleaning of the sand, when the pressure has gone up on the filter, or you feel the vacuum is not doing its job that is when you should backwash.
keep scooping, backwashing, scooping, backwashing. It has taken us all week to get rid of arm and hammer laundry deterent from our pool. Thought it was baking soda.
That depends on where the pool is situated. There is a minumum amount of time that a filter needs to run to keep water clean.

Yes it does. I've replaced my sand twice in 12 years. But I know others who have not. Depends on the amount of debri it has to remove and what type. I have too many nearby trees. I knew my sand was finished when the back pressure got so high it blew out the skimmer basket when it turned off. Replacing the sand takes a couple of hours. Good luck. Sand needs to be replaced every three to five years. Proper backwashing and treatment with a sand revitalizer will keep your filter working efficiently throughout the sand's useful lifecycle.
No.. but u do have OCD if you keep checking if all the light bulbs are turned exactly 36 degrees to the right
Let me say, I have never had a problem with any treated water coming from a pool that went onto the grass or sprayed on the trees or flowers. In fact, the lawn was greener and grew faster where the water was discharged from the pool after heavy rain to lower the water level or backwashing the filter to keep the pool water clean.
These are the instructions for backwashing a sand filter(1) stop the pool filter if it is going(2) empty out the leaf basket and the Hair filter so that there is no obstruction before the pump.(3)Turn the lever on the top of the sand filter from the filter position to the backwash position, usually in the opposite direction. You will note a clear bubble some where near the multi port control on the top of the sand filter, keep an eye on this once the backwash has started(4) switch the pump on. You will note water rushing around in the clear bubble. at firs the water will be clean then it will turn dirty when it clears up again let it run for another minute or so then turn of the pump.(5) now turn the lever on the top of the sand filter to rinse. once again you will notice the bubble get a title cloudy when it is clear let it run another 30 seconds and turn the pump of again.(6) Now turn the lever on top of the sand filter back to its original position which should be filter. and its all done. Some systems do not have the observation bubble. with these if you can see the backwash water go to waste keep an eye on it instead. or just wait til you loose about 100mm / 4" from the top of the pool.there is a possibility of getting a little cloudy water coming back into the pool after this, don't worry about it it will soon settle down and it only indicates that the rinse wasn't quite long enough.
Yes.
pull the filter out and hose it off, replace the filter, if you vaccum your pool more frequently it should help keep the filter cleaner
