Short answer: Overpopulation. China has over one billion people. And although China is roughly the size of the United States, it so happens that China has a huge mountain range covering most of the country. Which means that China has very few areas where there is good soil to grow crops. If the population if China continues to grow at the rate it once did, people will starve because the land cannot produce enough food to support demand. The government also found out they were running out of water too.

Generally speaking PRC China (People's Republic of China) can only have one child up until this day. But they recently changed to that if the baby's mom and dad are the only child from each of their own family, then the couple can have a second child or if the couple have money. Recently, the government just forced a pregnant mom to have abortion when her second baby in the womb was already 7 mon old.

To clarify any misunderstanding, PRC China never went to Taiwan; ROC China (Republic of China) does NOT have the supremacy over Taiwan and ROC never had One Child Policy. Thus, Taiwan does not have One Child Policy. With regards of ROC's supremacy, you can Google online and finds that Taiwan's status is undetermined, although ROC China is located in Taiwan.

China has the largest population in the world. That means that hey have more people per square mile which leaves little room for housing. If people could have more tha none child, chins would be so over crowded that the living conditions would be absolutely unbearable!!

In 1974 China reached a million population, so they introduced the one child policy. They did this because of the lack of resources. Children born under this policy who were a second child have grown up without being able to go to school, get any government resources nor have identity papers. They live in a shadowland.

If this is true it would be because of the population of the country.

Due to the huge population of people and the necessary resources to sustain this level of population, the China government mandated a law that each couple is permitted to have only 1 child.

As authentic Chinese man, I think the one-child policy taken by the Chinese Central Government has more advantages than disadvantages, though it's not carried out completed in some rural areas of China. I have to admit that the policy do help China a lot both in economy development and social development.
