Unlike the Senate, which gives two Senators to every state, the House of Representatives gives a number of representatives to each state, in proportion to the population of that state. So larger states have more representatives. This logically follows from the idea that all citizens are represented equally in a democracy. A million citizens in one state would logically have ten times the representation of a hundred thousand citizens in a smaller state.

Which house of congress would have been favored more by large states?

Well, if by large you mean in population, then they would favor the House of Representatives, where the members are determined by population size.

What does the Constitution say about the size of the House of Representatives?

Best answer is to read the document, but basically the House shall not exceed 435 voting members (there are nonvoting members such as Guam, Puerto Rico, etc....). Representatives are from districts which are redrawn every 10 years after the Census (which is also mandated by the Constitution). States with greater populations such as California, thus have more representatives. The concept is great but in actuality Gerrymandering (the drawing of districts to favor the incumbent or the party in power) is rampant.

Suppose none of the candidates received over half of the electoral college votes for president?

Presidential candidates in the United States must receive a majority vote in the Electoral College (270 votes) to win the election. If none of the candidates running receive this majority, the House of Representatives elects the President from the top three candidates who received the majority of votes.

Why did the framers of the US Constitution favor a two-house legislature?

so that the small states like New Jersey and the big states like Virginia would be happy. everybody would have 2 senators favoring New Jersey. also the amount of reps. would depend on population favoring Virginia.

What are the House of Reps member's occupations?

One term for a representative in the house is two years long. One term for a senate member is six years long. When our founding fathers were in the process of writing the constitution (after the Articles of Confederation failed), some states wanted to have a government based on the population of the state, while the smaller, less populous states disagreed. So they came to this conclusion, a House of Representatives will be created in favor of the population of the state, while a senate will have two representatives per state. So, the way that a rep. is chosen is based on the population of your state. The House does many things including being involved with the passing of new laws. And, if needed at any time voting on an improvement/change to the constitution.

Why do larger states favor the house of representives?

The House of Representatives gives the larger populated states more influence over legislation. The number of representatives per state are chosen based on the states population, so a state like California has far more representatives (thus more influence) than a state like Kansas.

Does the make -up of the senate favor large states only?

No, there is an equal number of senators for each state.... 2. They also each hold terms of six years. The house of representatives calculates the number of representatives per state by its population. The reason we have these two legislative houses (meaning we are "Bicameral." Say our congress is bicameral in class and you will sound smart) is to make congress fair for all states. The smaller states favor the senate while the larger states favor the house. -The Senate adds two representatives to the state's number in the House, meaning that the Senate increases small state's power in the Senate moreso than for larger states, because in a state with only 1 representative from population, the 2 would increase its number by 66%, while for a larger state such as california, the bonus is much more negligable.

Did northerners favor the tallmadge amendment proposed that Missouri be admitted as a free state?

They were in favour. The House of Representatives passed the amendment - here, northern states had a majority as they had more representatives due to their larger populations. In the Senate, where representation between Free and Slave states was balanced, the bill admitting Missouri as a state was passed without the amendment.

Why do the smaller states favor the Senate?

Smaller states favor the senate because they are given equal voting power, regardless of population. Unlike the House of Representatives where votes are delegated based on population and geographical boundaries

If no candidate has more the half of the votes from the Electoral College who chooses the President of the US?

If no candidate receives the necessary votes in the Electoral College, the election goes to the House of Representatives. In the House, each state gets one vote. So the representatives of the state gather and vote within their delegation and then vote as one on the House floor. The person who receives a majority (26) is elected President. There are some problems with voting in the House. The small states (population wise) have the same influence as the larger states. If a majority of representatives from a state cannot agree on a candidate, that state loses its vote. If some members of the House favor a strong third-party candidate, it could make it difficult for any candidate to get the needed 26 votes.NovaNet: The House of Representatives

What did states with large populationfavorthe Virginia plan?

The Virginia Plan, in having a unicameral legislature whose delegates are assigned by population (much like having just the House of Representatives), favored large states, because their large populations would give them power.
