The layer of crap on the sand is getting thicker. Wait until the manufacturer's upper limit of 120 PSI has been reached, and watch that baby explode.
You might want to consider backwashing the filter on a monthly basis during the summer.
Your pump and filter are rated at a certain psi. To change that you would have to change the pump and maybe the filter.
This is normal with my DE filter. When I first turn the pump on the pressure starts at about 5 psi. During the next 30-60 minutes, it rises to 15 psi and then stablizes there. So, I use 15 psi as my "starting" pressure and don't backwash until it reaches 20 psi. When was the last time you had the filter broken down and cleaned????
The psi on your pool pump indicates how much dirt there is in the filter, the cleaner the filter the lower the psi. normally when the filter is clean you wil have a low psi and as the filter gets dirtier it will rise. However if the psi suddenly becomes much lower then usual it may indicate a fault in the filtration is letting unfiltered water circulate back into the pool as in a torn filter cartridge.
One psi makes a column of mercury rise 51.71 millimeters, based on the measurement that one psi is approximately 6.894 KPa. This is equivalent to 0.00328 feet.
30ft rise = 13 psi (pressure is 13 psi higher at bottom of a 30ft column that at the top). Water Pressure = .433 psi per ft for a column of water at 62 degrees F.
Typically you only need to backwash when your filter's PSI is double its starting PSI level. For example, mine starting PSI is between 7 and 12, so when it gets to between 15 and 20 PSI I'll backwash.
limit is 86% of 93 psi = 86/100 x 93 psi ≈ 79.98 psi As the psi is measured to the nearest 0.1 psi, the safe limit is a measured 79.9 psi.
Clean the Filter!
by restricting the flow and installing a pressure switch.
ph8170 (9-12 psi relief valve) or ph4967 (14 psi relief)
Depends upon your starting pressure and pump type. Generally however you want to keep your max pressure at about 8-10 psi above your first time running the filter or your most recent sand change, if it goes above this run a backwash and a rinse cycle if it still persists at a higher pressure it's time to replace your sand.
