The spca thinks it is cruel to put too many chickens in too small an area or to use too small a cage per bird. Animals require a certain amount of space to live a healthy and happy life. If the space is too small the birds become diseased and there is a lot of unsociable behaviour such as picking and cannibalism.

Which one is happier between chickens in large pens and chickens in small cages?

Chickens in large pens, with room to move around to do what chicken do, will always be happier than a chicken in a small cage. However, free-ranging chickens are undoubtable the happiest. Think about yourself, would you like being in a small cage with no room to move or stretch?

Should chickens be caged?

This depends on the reason why you keep the chickens and for what purpose. Chickens raised solely for egg production are often kept in cages for both security and ease of care. Meat chickens are usually housed in large barn like structures and able to wander around. Chickens on farms are more often free range and are only placed in cages when they are ill or there is reason to think they are in danger from a predator. As for whether it is cruel to keep the hens caged all their life, a chicken who has never know anything but a cage from the time it is hatched would not likely be very happy away from the security it has know forever. The few battery hens rescued and raised on my farm are often happy to stay inside the single cage I have inside the chicken coop but as there is no door on the front of the cage they have the option of wandering the farmyard but choose not to.

What are the ethics behind egg production augment?

Battery chickens, the chickens used in egg production, are kept in battery cages. These are tiny cages with very little room for the chicken. They are kept in conditions that would shock most people who eat their eggs. Bright, artificial lights are used to simulate daylight, to make them lay more than they would in natural conditions. They can barely move in their cages, are kept separate from other chickens, and do not have freedom or any kind of natural conditions to live in. Free-range eggs are eggs from free-range chickens, chickens kept in natural conditions- normal lighting, better food, and room to move around. While battery chickens produce more eggs per chicken with less room, the chickens themselves need better care than that, or so many people think.

Why dont chickens like staying in cages?

Think of yourself being forcfully put into a cage. Would you like it? Also they don't have any stimulation in a cage.(somthin 2 play with)

Why birds should not be caged?

Birds are living creatures and feel neglected and not loved if they are in cages. Ask your self would you like to live in your bathroom all the time? I think that is a cruel and mean thing to do.
