Why does the Temp read out only works cold readings and not warm?

The temperature gauge in most vehicles is built into the outside body of the vehicle. It measures cold very well because the temperature is not affected by the heat of the sun. When your vehicle is in direct sunlight (especially in darker colored vehicles), sunlight heats the outside of the vehicle to a higher temperature than the temperature outside actually is. Most of the time once you start driving, you will get a more accurate temperature reading.

The temp blend door actuator could be faulty. With engine warmed up and running, open the hood and feel both heater hoses with your hands. If both hoses are hot I would suspect the blend door is not working. If one hose is hot and the other is warm or cold, I would suspect a blocked heater core. Try flushing the heater core. If both hoses are only warm, I would suspect a faulty thermostat.

I would check the heater core to see if it pluged, a flush wouldn't hurt. also you want to check temp linkage on duct work just above gas pedal. if it came off it spins freely and would only blow cold air because it defaults to that position
