Why does the engine on my 1989 Volkswagen cabriolet keep stalling after warm up and in stop and go driving and why does a constant whining sound come from the rear right hand side upon starting?

Your fuel pump is located there and it could be the bearings on the pump or it could be getting air in the fuel is a lubricant for the bearings and when there is no fuel it is possible you could hear the bearings - my guess your fuel pump is packin up but do check for air leaks
