First I would take it to an suto parts store like Advance - they have a computer you can hook it up to for free. If a code such as p0101 comes up then it could be the Mass air flow sensor, oxygen sensor or the throttle positioning sensor. It is most likely the TPS. Replace the throttle positioning sensor - usually about 59 dollars at Advance - must be ordered. If it's not that then check the throttle cable itself, it can be adjusted if it's loose.

When your standard car is idling, it should be in neutral. If it isn't, that means you are holding the clutch in which will eventually burn it out. Save yourself some time and money and only use the clutch to shift. Otherwise keep it in neutral when you are idling.

by putting it in neutral
There are several things that can cause your 1997 Kia engine to idle too high. The most common cause is a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator.
A bad idle control module will make it race up to about 3000 r.p.m. when in park.
Sounds to me like the clutch is shot, assuming it is a standard shift.
check your timing & up your idle a little
