You probably have a slipping clutch band in your transmission. Take it to a transmission shop.
Modern automatic transmissions are fairly forgiving. if you shifted into low, the transmission probably ignored you and refused to shift because the engine rpm was too high.

"Racing for pink slips" means?
Sounds like it's the torque converter to me..............it is connected to the flywheel of the engine and pumps the fluid through the tranny. It may have lost it's effectiveness to pump fluid.
