As the hydrogen supply begins to run low, the sun increases its density and temperature to maintain a constant energy generation rate, or rate of "fusion". The rise in density and temperature causes more energy to rise to the sun's surface, and creates a thicker, but lighter, outer layer.
So, the sun is not exactly growing; its matter is merely being distributed in a different and slightly more inconsistent way.
