Here's what GM has to say about cold shifting in the Catera:

1998 Cadillac Catera Info - Cold Shift Pattern (Normal Condition) #01-07-30-001 - (01/16/2001)
Cold Shift Pattern (Normal Condition) 1997-2001 Cadillac Catera
with Hydra-matic 4L30-E (RPO ML4)
Some owners of the above vehicles may comment on increased or higher engine speeds when the vehicle is driven immediately from a cold start. The Transmission Control Module (TCM) software contains a function that modifies shift speed speeds when the engine is cold. When activated, this feature will delay the shifts 10 to 15 km/h (6 to 9 mph), depending on the throttle angle.
The cold shift pattern enables if all of the following conditions exist:
The cold shift pattern is disabled under any of the following conditions:
This is a normal condition, no repair should be attempted.

So unless you are experiencing something significantly different that described in this bulletin, there is nothing wrong. Hope this helps.
I would guess that is for the "sport" mode. That is correct. If pushed it will hold what ever gear you are in to hold until you shift to another higher gear. It won't allow the transmission to shift.
My '97 won't shift out of 1st gear when its cold (it will after it warms up). I found that pushing the "S" button will enable it to shift when cold. It has worked every time so far.
To answer directly, yes. A bad MAF sensor can affect a computer-controlled transmission if the transmission control computer uses the MAF signal to determine shift points.
If your not starting in low gear check the little snow flake button next to the gear shift. If this has been pressed your starting in 3 rd. gear.
The S button on top of the gear shifter stands for sport mode. it makes the car shift smother in faster take off
got shift solenoid put in transmission and need it to read the need parts
there is no fuse that makes the transmission shift the transmission shifts on cylinoids and rpms
Use the lever on top of the assembly to release it or shift your transmission in gear. otherwise the problem lies elsewhere as, frozen breaks. !
transmission down shift after fuild change
The gears in your transmission may be sticking or worn out. This would cause your transmission to not be able to shift.
The Chevrolet Lumina shift solenoid can be found on the top of the transmission. The shift solenoid will be near the front of the transmission.
your transmission could be shot. if it will not shift at all, then you will need a new one.
