If your computer stops working after a certain period of being on, the likelihood is that you have a hardware problem. If this problem does not occur with XP, it is possible that the problem lies within your graphics processing unit, as Vista is more demanding within this area than XP. On the other hand, you could have a virus, or some conflicting software issue. My advice would be to download a good free anti virus program, such as AVG, alongside a free spy ware program. Check your computer with these products, if this does not solve the problem, you could reinstall windows. If this doesn't work, try swapping out your graphics card, or adding one if you are running on a motherboard gfx chip. Rather than buying one, I would recommend borrowing one from a friend if possible, removing and installing a gfx card is a very simple operation, and a simple Google search should yield aid if required. Otherwise, take your p.c to a tech shop.
Vista, whilst contraversial, is in my humble opinion an excellent operating system, no "better" or "worse" than XP, OS X, or Linux operating systems, and certainly not as flawed as certain vocal commentators will have you believe. Whilst operating systems certainly do have bugs, the flaw is more often native to the machine or user.
