It's probably a form of tarnish called toning. Depending on what the coin has been exposed to over the last ~140 years it could have taken on any number of colors. I've seen coins with blue, green, and red toning. Many of them are prized by collectors for their unusual appearance. Whatever you do, DON'T try to clean it!

Coins like this have no numismatic value because they have been altered. The added gold was not done by the U.S. Mint. Most dealers buy them as "Junk Silver" to be melted. The silver value as of today is about $17.00.
