Why does your 1991 Ford explorer make a loud clunking sound periodically?

You might check to see if the rubber isolation bushings need replacing. They are located at the bottom of the shock and strut area of the wheels. Mine were red in color yours may be black or other. Inspect these bushings to see if they are showing wear.
