A few possibilities come to mind:

  • water has entered the distributor cap. (a little WD40 or silicone spray in the cap will usually evacuate any water from it)
  • old spark plug wires can have leaks, either in the boots or the wire insulation that allow water to cause shorts.
  • water has somehow entered the combustion chamber(s).
  • water is causing a short in some other ignition electrical wiring or connection.
