had the same problem with my 03 2500hd. its the selector switch. they've had problems with them in the past.
Take transfer case apart its stuck I'm doin it right now
Stuck in "Park"? check stop light fuse and stop light switch Try turning key to 1st (unlock) position then shift to neutral to start vehicle and then shift to Drive
Shift it on 2H, then "REVERSE" for about 10 to 15 Feet....
Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, and your transfer case would need service.
One possibility is the shift rod in the steering column may have broke, that happened to my 93. The shift lever wouldn't move, that is what led me to believe it was the shift rod.
put it in neutral then shift to 2wd
Going from 2H to 4H is pretty straightforward. Stop, pull it into 4H then the light should come on. If it doesn't shift to Reverse and back up a couple inches then shift back to Drive. If it doesn't go into 4H by then, something is probably stuck or damaged. Going back to 2H is the same thing, stop, shift to 2H. If the indicator doesn't go off, you may need to "rock" the vehicle a little, shift to reverse briefly then back to Drive. If you accidentally go too far and drop into transfer case neutral, you'll need to turn off the engine and shift to Park THEN shift back to 2H. Going to 4L is a little more effort. Stop, shift to PARK, then push the lever all the way forward to 4L. Make sure it's in park and the vehicle is stopped otherwise the transfer case will shift to neutral and that's not the same as the transmission shifting to neutral. Once it's in 4L, THEN you can shift to Drive. Going back is the same way. Stop, Park, shift back to 2H, then go.
your shift solenoid a is stuck open in your tranny time for a gagage visit
If you are no longer able to shift, then it's possible the linkage is broken. If this is a periodic problem, you may need to adjust the linkage or shift cable so that everything is prooerly lined up
put the transmission in neutral and shift the transfer case to 2WD. if the transfer case lever is stuck, try driving forward very slowly (walking speed) then putting the transmission in neutral and shift the transfer case to 2WD while coasting forward. once the transfer case is in 2wd, it may be necessary to disengage the 4wd by driving the vehicle in reverse for a short distance.
