Not sure why so I took my 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8 SE with 69K miles to my personal mechanic. He said it is my fuel pump. The fuel filter and fuel pump are located under the backseat and you can not just buy and install a fuel filter in this model, unlike older models, you have to replace the entire fuel pump, he quoted me $275.00 total. It seems that first thing in the morning it will start up immediately and directly if I stop, turn off for a minute or two and turn back on but if I start, turn off for 1/2 hr. going shopping 1-2 hrs it will take 2 to 4 turns for it to fire up and then sometimes it acts like it is not getting any gas at all, sputterring. Well, my mechanic looked at my pump and said it was not leaking and looked okay. Keep driving and prime, turn key three or four times before actually full turn to get fire because the gas is not making it to the engine at first turn when I have stopped for any length of time. When you do this you will hear the gas making it to the engine, listen carefully, about the 2nd or 3rd turn but turn it one more time, fourth time and should start. This is the ONLY issue I've had with my Nissan. BUT TODAY I learned on the news that the fuel pumps are really working hard when we only fill 1/4 to 1/2 tank, it is causing fuel pumps to work hard and some are actually burning out. They were talking about the larger vehicles like Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navagator which start in the $1500.00 price range to remove and replace. It is due to most people only filling 1/4 to 1/2 tank of gas, it gets down so far and has to work "harder" is about the entire scope of that report. But then keep looking because enough complaints about our Nissan fuel pump may cause a recall. I'm still checking to see what else is out there for help. GOOD LUCK.

Normally it will last the life of the engine and is replaced when the engine is overhauled.
No, but it can be replaced. I would recommend taking to a professional.
