If you're certain that the sound is from the serpentine belt you should check the belt tensioner. A weak tensioner spring will result in slipping and a noisy belt.
You may need to adjust the tension on the belt.
Belt slipping? Bad bearing in belt driven accessory?
chain
When I bought my '02 I was told that it no longer has the timing belt/chain that needs to be replaced at around 60,000 miles (my '96 did have a timing belt that needed to be replaced every 60,000 miles). I have put over 80,000 mi. on my '02 and nice to know I won't be getting surprised by timing belt failure. Did have to have the serpentine belt on the engine replaced recently though.
when the defroster is turned on, it activates the a/c compressor. the clutch may be locking up on the compressor.
I usually reccommend about every 90,000 miles.
Something near the belt path, check to see if there are any loose covers touching. Something will have marks from the old belt rubbing it
The water pump is driven by the cam belt so the belt is replaced at the same time. The belt and pump must be replaced every 90,000 miles as this is an interference engine. The cost depends on who performs the repair and where you live. Call around for estimates.
If you have ever replaced a water pump on any vehicle the answer would be "yes" you can do it yourself.
how ofen do you change a timing belt on 96 excel
Be care-full my radiator blew up and burnt me. I replaced Radiator, thermostat, and water pump. Timing belt is in the way so I replaced it too. OK Now
