They don't get worse at night for everyone. Panic attacks are triggered by different things for different people. You may want to explore what may be causing you to have an increase in panic at night. What is triggering that panic feeling? Pehaps you need more family support at this time; especially your mom - you might be surprised how much she loves and supports you. Give her the opportunity.

Waking up in panic shortly after falling asleep can be related to anxiety. There could be associations made with going to sleep, such as trauma occurring in the past or being conditioned in some way to not sleeping well at night (such as being in a more volatile household growing up or having to be on guard at night). In addition to past trauma or conditioning, there could be current anxieties (emotions, situations) that have not been adequately addressed, making it difficult to fall asleep. If you are in a situation in which there is always a lot on your "to do" list, it may be difficult to fall asleep in anticipation of all the tasks you have to complete. You may find it helpful to keep a journal by your bed and write down all thoughts for 5 quiet minutes prior to falling asleep. This will help "declutter" your mind and allow you to address them the next day after you're well rested.

I suffered from panic attacks back in the early to late 1970's and they aren't pleasant. Usually stress (trying to deal with panic attacks is certainly added stress) causes a restless sleep and you don't go into full REM sleep. Humans dream every half hour and we don't remember most of them, but we aren't in full REM sleep then the first few seconds before we wake up we can remember a nightmare, bad situation (that could cause fear and the onset of a panic attack.) Even odors play a big part in this. Example: You are on a crowed area of town and you may smell burnt coffee and suddenly you are dealing with a panic attack. Why? Because unknowingly when you had suffered from a previous panic attack there wasthe smell of burnt coffee present. Also certain conversations can set off a panic attack and it's only because you had a previous panic attack before that thissametopic of conversation sends you into another panic attack. I suggest you see your doctor as there are medications out there to help with your panic attacks. Along with medications you should see a psychologist and learn the tools for Cognitive Therapy which helps you deal with stress and I use those tools to this day. Eat a good diet, get on the meds, do yoga or some sort of exercise (get the adrenal gland back to a good pace) stay away from caffeine (that means chocolate too), alcohol, smoked meats, cheeses, etc. I am now 65 years old and lead a very healthy lifestyle, feel great (do have my odd aches and pains, butnothing I can't handle) and have a good quality of life. You won't die from panic attacks and you won't have a heart attack even though you feel your chest tighten and feel you are having one. You should learn to breath through your panic attacks and here's how: 1. Breathair deep inside with your nose with mouth closed.#2. Then slowly let the air out through your mouth until your lungs are almost empty. Do this NO MORE than 4 - 5times. This methodworks to stop hyperventilation andI use it all the time. It lowers the stress level. You can also do this when you are in bed or if you wake up suddenly. Almost every person will experience at least one panic attack in their lifetime. The onset of peri menopause to menopause can also create the odd panic attack. Hormone related. So you are not alone! There are many people that suffer from panic attacks and it also includes ALL races of people, the poor, wealthy and famous. Johnny Depp, John Candy, James Garner, Kim Bassinger (had it very bad), Wynona Ryder, to name a few.
