the guy is protecting his reputation and friendship, he took a risk in telling you he likes you but realized, seeing that you didnt feel the same way, that maybe he had made a mistake and maybe this was making things awkward. the only thing that your best friend could do is deny it and hope everything goes back to normal. he's protecting his reputation at the same time because if you told somebody that he likes you, it might humiliate him, so if he denies it its an easier way for him to get out of the situation.
