Cats roll on catnip because it releases the drug called Nepetalactone. This causes the cat to have a "high" sensation. This high lasts for 10-15 minutes, and is a safe natural high for the cat. (No need to worry). Cats know when they have had enough and move on. Some cats will not even go near catnip.

∙ 14y agoThey do this as a form of dust bathing or to scratch an itch. Cats dust bathe (or bathe in litter) to replenish their body's beneficial bacteria and to scratch itches. When an outdoor cat rolls in dirt, she covers herself in soil that contains beneficial digestive bacteria. She then grooms herself with her tongue and ingests these bacteria, which keep her body functioning well. A cat that is frequently bathed or brushed will instinctively dust bathe more often to replace bacteria removed by human grooming. Cats without access to the outdoors dust bathe wherever they can--usually in the litter box.
Also, your cat could be doing this because she wants to mark the litterbox as her territory.
