Try to find trainers and books that use a "positive approach" to dog training. While negative reinforcement seems to work quickly, over the long term a dog trained with negative reinforcement will be more prone to misbehave and also have emotional problems (that can result in other problems like inappropriate urination, etc.). Positive training takes a bit longer at first but has a much better long-term result--and the dog will be emotionally better off as well.
