Usually means that all doors (including rear hatch) are not closed securely.
5x7 in both front and rear doors.
On your 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : Open the rear doors from the outside and on the end of the doors near the latch you will see a small lever that is used to select child locks on or off
I'm having the same issue as you are. Reshutting...uh...nearly slamming the doors multiple times eventually fixed it. However the problem is back every day and now the rear interior light won't shut off. All the doors are shut and there is nothing blocking them. I'm still searching for an answer. 1997 Mercury Mountaineer 5.0 L could be that the rear hatch may not be closed completely, i have had the same thing happen on my 1998
no. mercury companies closed its doors.

Opposite ProblemI am having the opposite problem. The doors on my 97 Mercury Mountaineer continuously lock themselves - to the point of draining the battery. I had to pull the fuse to stop the lock from repeatedly locking over and over. Any thoughts? Try replacing the battery in the keyless entry remote.Digital electronics get stupid when their voltage level is low. Another possible answer is one ove door lock switches or the switch by the rear hatch is stuck.
The door ajar light might stay on in a Mercury Mountaineer if a door is not shut properly. Sometimes a door will seem like it is shut, but will not be shut enough to trip the light off. Check for dirt or other debris in the door latch for all doors.
Could be a bad actuator in the door
no sears has not closed doors
Did u ever find a solution?!?! My driver side rear door will not open from inside or out! Both doors won't open from inside but the doors were still useful when opened from Outside. It's annoying!
I've had that happen in my 2002 mountaineer. what I've found is that if you spray the door latches with wd40 it will clean off the sensors and the door ajar light should go out. but make sure all the doors are shut.
