white smoke does not always mean oil. Where is the smoke coming from. Sometimes small pin holes in the water system can cause a white smoke or steam which appears to be smoke. If the engine is at idle that would be the only time you could see that type of hole until it gets bigger. Check for any loss of water/antifreeze in the vehicle.
sounds like you have head gasket problem if the exhaust smoke is white in colour then its engine coolant if its blue smoke then its burning oil you will need to get the engine pressure tested at a garage.
If its an old engine maybe because its burning more oil. On the other hand it may be running rich and need a tune up.
The idle control valve works by regulating the idle speed of the engine. The idle speed of the engine is usually controlled by the engine of the computer.
Blue smoke? Black smoke? White smoke? from the tailpipe? from the engine? from the midpipe? at all times? only when it's first started? when under load or at idle? need a little more information here.....
Most often the case of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust is the cause of piston rings going bad. The rough engine idle is also the cause of poor seals and piston rings.
The smoke is caused by worn valve guides, while the engine is sitting idle for some time, the oil seeps down around the vave stems, when you start the car, the burning of this oil is what you see coming out of the exaust pipe.
Usually a puff of blue at start up means poor valve seals or loose valve guides. Other symptoms depending on how bad it is are blue smoke under engine braking, like slowing from highway speed and when it gets bad Smoke at idle but not with the engine under load.
because that's kind of a big engine
Worn valve guides? New answer : Worn valve guides WILL cause some what of a rough idle and engine would smoke at all times. If engine smokes at start up only and then quites then your problem would be the VALVE SEALS.
Excessive smoke from the exhaust, and an engine miss. If you remove a plug wire while the engine is at idle and the noise is gone or almost gone then that would indicate the cylinder that the piston is bad.
