But the cooler air masses are closer to the ground because they are denser (contain more molecules per volume) and displace the warmer air, which in effect rises. This warm air contains the water vapor that forms cloud droplets as it rises and cools. Eventually much of the cloud's water will condense into drops and fall back as rain.

The air currents are stronger than the rate at which gravity makes the rain fall (which is not that fast). Clouds are so light, that even the smallest upward air current can make a clouds stay up. Rain falling is basically when the mass of the drops exceed the air currents.
