Bruce Springsteen wrote "Born in the USA" as a wake up song for people to recognize the American soldiers of Vietnam and how they were treated in the USA post-war. He also wanted to honor them and describe what horrible things and political red tape that the soldiers had to go through. The country thought it was a pro-american song. Do people ever listen to lyrics? Ronald Reagan even used it as his theme song during his 1984 campaign. He rarely plays it but when he does it is a dull acoustic slide guitar version that I don't particularly like even though I am a huge fan. I don't like the original either.

∙ 13y agoDon't be fooled by the apparently patriotic chorus, because the song criticises the Vietnam War and how veterans were treated when they got home. Instead of being welcomed home as heroes like in previous wars, they were largely ignored because this time the war had been lost.
