Can you just imagine what a holy mess you would have in a country that's
maybe 100 miles wide and has two different calendar dates in it.
-- You phone up your dentist for an appointment, and he gives you one on a
certain date. The dentist's office could be in the section where the date is the
same as yours, or one day different.
-- Flu shots cost $35, but the Health Department is giving them free to everyone
who shows up there on a certain date. The clinic could be on the same date as
you are, or one day different.
-- Your electric bill is overdue and costs 10% more if you pay it after the 15th of
the month. Their office could be in the section where the date is the same as
yours, or one day different.
-- Your shop has an order for 1,300 pieces, but you have to make delivery by
the 21st of the month or else the order is canceled. Your manager thinks you
can just barely make it if everybody works some overtime. One day can make
the difference. What day exactly does the production have to be finished ?
Where did the order come from ? Was it from the customer's local plant, or from
their office in Singapore ? Their local plant is a day ahead of yours, their Singapore
office is the same date as your plant, but a day ahead of your business office,
and right now we can't remember whether your business office in the next
town is on the same date as your plant, and we're starting to get a headache.
-- Payday on your job is on the 15th of the month. The payroll office could be in the
same section where you work, or their date could be one day different from yours.
And if it's one day different, it could be one day ahead or a day behind. And your
job could be in the same date as your home, or a day off.
-- Hamburger is on special at the supermarket until the 15th of the month. You
can't buy it now, but you get paid on the 15th. The 15th at the supermarket might
be the same as the 15th that you get paid on, or one day off. Where is the market's
head office ? All the stores in the chain may or may not be on the same date.
And if they are, it may or may not be the same date as your company's payroll
office, or your home.
-- Your daughter is in the 3rd Grade. She brings home a note that the 3rd Grade
is having their pictures taken next month on the 12th, so be sure to wear a
white blouse to school that day. Now you have to find out whose 12th ... it
could be your 12th, the 12th at some other 3rd grade kid's house, the school
building's 12th, or the 12th at the photographer's shop.
The International Date Line used to split one country in the Pacific, but they passed
a law that changed the date in half the country to match the date in the other half,
just to avoid these hassles.

The International Date Line is a fake line that runs through the Pacific Ocean. This line separates calendar days so that they do not overlap.
not sure what is up with all that^ but from the north pole to the south pole on one side of the world the international date line is the international date line. On the other side of the world The international date line is the prime meridian
through the middle of the Pacific Ocean
The Prime Meridian is located at 0 degrees, the international date line is not. There is only one prime meridian, there are many international date line.
The International Date Line (IDL) passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean, roughly following the 180° longitude but deviating to pass around some territories and island groups (Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, etc). The line deviates from a straight line to keep it from passing through countries such as the USA (Alaska), Russia (Wrangel Island and Chukchi Peninsula), or New Zealand, and island nations such as the Marshall Islands and the Aleutian Islands. This makes all of Russia territory to the west of the IDL and all of the USA to the east.
