Domain names are host name which gives identity to internet Protocol on internet. There are more than 2 crore websites at present and searching and memorizing a website is very difficult if it have IP Address with some numbers only. So Domain Name System's (DNS) rules and procedures are followed while giving a name to the website.

The domains are registered with the Domain Registrar who governs and administer the domains.

Simplified: If we did not use domain names, you would have to type a string of numbers (an IP address) to get to any website. For most websites, you would also have to type a port number and / or a user or file name.

Example (actual IP not used): "67.196.138.62/~answers" or something similar would be used to access the home page of the answers website.

Most modern websites have the ability to access them with an IP address disabled for the public. So I guess the true answer is, you wouldn't be able to access many sites at all without domain names.

Computers communicate using numbered addresses. The domain names exist for humans to remember things like e-mail addresses (@yourdomain.com) and websites (http://some-domain-name.org) so that we can type them into our web browser or e-mail or tools and Domain Name Service can turn the name we can remember into an address the computers use to communicate.

Why do websites need to purchase a web domain name?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is responsible for translating URLs like www.answers.com in the ip address, the real address, of a website (for example 69.63.184.142). So without a DNS you'd have to remember all the IP addresses of the websites which is way harder than remembering alphanumeric names.

Is there anyway to get a free domain?

I do not think so...if there were, the company would be getting a rip off and no profit for their work in creating a program. But there are websites that are really cheap to get domain names. Websites without domain names also get noticed almost as much as websites with domain names.

What does the part after a domain mean?

The URL in the address bar in your browser is comprised of several components. First is the protocol used to transfer the files from the web server to your web browser (commonly HTTP or HTTPS) next comes the domain name (which is itself comprised of several parts), followed by the directory path to the specific web page to be loaded. The part after the domain name might look like: /path/to/web/page The domain name is comprised of several parts. The first is the top-level domain, for example .com, .net, .org, .us, etc. Next comes the second-level domain name, in our example above this would be "example" Second level-domain names come directly to the left of the top-level domain (the .com, .net, etc.). You can have third level-domains which come immediately to the left of a second level domain (in our example the "www" is a third-level domain). You can have fourth- and fifth-level domains and so on.

Why can't I use periods when I try making a domain?

Because a period in a web address other that www. and .com, like www.my.website.com refers to a subdomain. You still need a registered domain before you can create a sub domain. If you really want a period in the web address, then register the second part as the domain (in this case, website.com) then create a subdomain (my) so that you can use the web address my.website.com.
