Why don't ReactOS developers focus on getting their operating system to run on real hardware?

ReactOS has few developers, which makes tracking down issues on real hardware much more difficult. For this reason, only virtual machines are targeted. ReactOS is not meant to be useful at this point in time, so it makes no difference on whether it runs on real hardware or not (which it actually usually does). A technically correct implementation is more important at this time than a functional one.

I am assuming you are actually talking about three distinct components here, because the question is rather vague. The OS and the Hardware, or the OEM Computer Manufactures. The best Hardware is usually made by the Top Tier manufactures such as Intel (CPU's), Nvidia (Video Cards) and ASUS (Very Good Motherboards). As far as OS's are concerned, Linux (there are many variations, but they are more difficult to work with and configure than windows as a rule of thumb, although they have come a very long way over the last 4 years. I would check out Ubuntu or Fedora, these two are my personal preferences, although Suse and others make very capable operating systems as well) As far as Windows, im sure you are familiar with this Operating System. I prefer 64-bit versions of either Vista or XP, and I look forward to Windows 7. As far as OEM Manufacturers... You most likely will be getting a Microsoft operating system and lower tier hardware (especially for motherboards and sound cards and video cards) so that they can increase margins. If you really want to know which branch is best, the answer to that is BUILD YOUR OWN.

They are essentially the customers. They are the people that will have to use the software being developed. They need to be able to express their opinions on what they are getting. They need to advise the developers and point out any problems they have with the system as it is developed. They can point out mistakes that the developers are making. If they are not involved, then the system that the developers produce is less likely to meet the requirements of the users. The users will find it harder to use. They will have no preview of the system. A lot of the problems they will find then, could have been fixed much earlier if they were involved. This would save time and money for the development process. Users may feel a system is being imposed on them if they have no input into its development. So for all of these and other reasons, it is important that they are involved.
